The Future of BioTech Jobs
The Biotechnology industry is growing rapidly, and as such, if you choose a career in Biotechnology you could be making a pretty sound career choice. At a time when many other industries are in decline, to actually direct your training and education towards a career in Biotechnology could be your ticket to a lifelong and rewarding career. But what type of jobs are there in BioTech? Is it just boring laboratory type stuff, involving lots of test tubes and white coats? Well, definitely not is the answer to that one, there’s a great and still growing range of positions available within the Biotechnology Industry. There are loads of different jobs on offer in the Biotech Industry, with different working environments, organizations and career paths.
Choice of Employers
Much of the knowledge and skills which you will learn in other industries are transferable to the Biotech Industry. You can work for pharmaceutical companies, in the field of agriculture (get it? field – agriculture – oh I’m wasted in this place) food or chemical companies, not to mention medicines and the like. There are also positions available within government agencies and universities.
Choice of Work
Yes, just like you can choose who you work for (to a point, better brush up on your interview techniques), you can also choose what type of work you want to train towards, there’s so much more choice than a laboratory and a white coat these days. Let’s look at the different options for one general end product. You can be a:
-
Scientist – researching the structure of a human protein which is involved in a disease
-
Laboratory Technician – performing all sorts of exciting experiments on that human protein
-
Engineer – is then needed to design, to build or to supervise a new facility to manufacture the new product
-
Process Technician – will then be needed to operate the facility and make the new product
-
Facilities Technician – will be needed to make sure that the operations continue to run smoothly
-
Clinical Research Associate – to oversee the clinical trials of the new product and make sure it “does exactly what it says on the tin”.
And that’s not all, there’s the administrative side of things, the sales and marketing, the logistics of getting the new product out into the market place – you see, there’s lots going on in the future for Biotech jobs.
Choice of Environment
Positions in the Biotech industry are literally opening up all over the world, the world really is your oyster if you choose a career in Biotechnology. You could find yourself working in:
-
a state of the art, cutting edge research laboratory
-
the cut and thrust of the fast paced business environment
-
on location, somewhere exotic, meeting with clients or inspecting manufacturing operations
-
you can work in a small town, you can work in a big city.
OK, do you get the picture? The future of Biotech jobs is in your hands. You will be able to work almost anywhere, in any environment, for many different types of employers, anywhere in the world. You can be a strictly 9 – 5, Monday – Friday kind of person, or you can work shifts, you can work in the classroom teaching the future employees of the Biotech Industry. You can work with your head, you can work with your hands, you can use a bit of both.
The bottom line is, there’s a lot to it and it’s growing. Maybe you should take a closer look at the BioTech industry for your future career.
